When July afternoons climb toward 90°F in Worland and the Big Horn Basin, a tired air conditioner starts to show its age. If your house just won’t cool down the way it used to, here are the most common reasons — and which ones are worth a service call before the unit gives out completely.
1. A dirty filter or coils
This is the most common (and cheapest) culprit. A clogged filter chokes airflow, and dirty condenser coils outside can’t release heat. Both make your AC run longer and cool less. Changing the filter is something you can do yourself every 1–3 months in summer; cleaning the coils is part of a professional tune-up.
2. Low refrigerant
If your system is low on refrigerant, it simply can’t pull enough heat out of your home — and you may notice ice on the lines or a hissing sound. Low refrigerant usually means a leak, which should be found and repaired rather than just “topped off” year after year.
3. An aging or undersized system
Older units lose efficiency, and a system that was undersized for your home was always going to struggle on the hottest days. If your AC is 12–15+ years old and facing a big repair, it’s often smarter to put that money toward a new, efficient system.
4. Duct and airflow problems
Leaky or unbalanced ducts let cooled air escape before it reaches your rooms. If some rooms are comfortable and others never cool down, the problem may be airflow, not the AC itself.
